Divorce Attorney in Norfolk County

Super Lawyers-Recognized Attorneys. Certified Mediators. Guardians Ad Litem.

When a marriage ends, the legal questions don’t arrive one at a time. Concerns about your children, the family home, retirement accounts, and long-term financial security all surface at once. At Ryder & Phelps, we handle divorce and family law matters for individuals and families throughout Norfolk County, with cases heard at the Norfolk Probate and Family Court in Canton. Our attorneys guide clients through every stage: separation, custody, support, alimony, and the division of marital assets.

What sets our firm apart is a combination of credentials that few family law practices carry. Attorneys Kathleen Ryder and Jordan Phelps are both MCLE-certified mediators and court-appointed Guardians Ad Litem, roles that give them direct familiarity with how the Norfolk Probate and Family Court evaluates disputes involving children and contested assets. That inside perspective informs how we build every case, whether it resolves through a negotiated separation agreement or proceeds to trial. Both are recognized as Super Lawyers in Massachusetts and New England.

Our Approach to Norfolk County Divorce Cases

We take a holistic approach to divorce, one that accounts for both the legal and personal dimensions of what our clients are going through. Every case receives a custom strategy built around the specific circumstances, not a standard playbook. For clients dealing with high-asset divorces, that means complex financial analysis, including business valuations, retirement asset division, and equity compensation. For clients focused on their children, our Guardian Ad Litem experience shapes how we approach custody negotiations and parenting plan disputes.

Ryder and Phelps are also regularly appointed by judges and other attorneys to mediate complex Probate and Family Court matters. That dual role as litigators and neutral mediators gives our clients a broader perspective: we understand how cases look from both sides of the table. Ryder & Phelps is recognized by Best Law Firms through Best Lawyers, and our practice is focused entirely on family law. Divorce clients here work with attorneys whose full attention is on this area of law.

Built on Trust. Proven by Results.

Court-Appointed Guardians Ad Litem

Focused Family Law Practice
Our practice is dedicated entirely to family law. Divorce clients work with attorneys whose full attention is on this area, not a general practice firm with a family law department.

The Norfolk Probate & Family Court

The Norfolk Probate and Family Court is located in Canton and has jurisdiction over divorce, custody, child support, alimony, property division, and abuse prevention matters for residents of 28 towns across Norfolk County. Towns served include Quincy, Dedham, Braintree, Wellesley, Needham, Milton, Brookline, Canton, Norwood, Franklin, Westwood, Walpole, Sharon, Stoughton, Weymouth, Wrentham, and others throughout the county. The court offers eFiling and a virtual registry for certain matters.

The Bar Association of Norfolk County has implemented a Conciliation Program providing court-connected dispute resolution services consistent with SJC Rule 1:18, and cases may be referred to mediation or conciliation through this program. Our attorneys’ familiarity with both the court and its connected dispute resolution resources means our clients are prepared for every stage of the process.

Divorce-Related Services for Norfolk County Clients

Divorce proceedings are often the starting point for a range of connected legal matters. Ryder & Phelps handles alimony disputes, child custody and paternity actions, child support, separation agreements, modification and contempt proceedings, and restraining orders in addition to the divorce filing itself.

Separation agreements reached through negotiation or mediation must be approved by the court and, once incorporated into a divorce judgment, are enforceable as court orders. Issues left unresolved or poorly drafted at the outset often lead to post-judgment modification proceedings, which means thorough representation from the beginning can help reduce the likelihood of returning to court. Our Guardian Ad Litem experience also directly informs how we handle contested custody matters, where the court appoints a GAL to represent the interests of the children involved.
